Best practices for efficient API requests in Gatsby

I have to admit I'm kind of a noob when it comes to this sort of thing but I'd like to make sure I'm making the most efficient use of API requests. Can anyone point me in the direction of a blog post or something that has some best practices outlined?

Perhaps this is less of a Sanity question and more of a Gatbsy question.

If you're using Gatsby and our source plugin, it will only do 2 API requests on build no matter how what happens in your gatsby app. 1 to fetch the GraphQL schema definition (to prevent missing fields), and one that hits the export endpoint and streams the dataset to Gatsby's datastore and internal GraphQL API.
