Spending alerts

Get notified when your organization's estimated monthly overage reaches an amount you choose.

Spending alerts tell you when the estimated overage on your organization plan reaches a dollar amount you set. An alert sends an email and a notification in the Sanity Dashboard. It never stops usage, and it does not change your spending limits.

How spending alerts work

  • You save one or more amounts in whole US dollars. Each amount is a separate alert. An organization can have up to 10 alerts. To add another, delete one first.
  • Sanity estimates your organization's overage for the current calendar month: usage above the quotas included in your organization plan, priced at the plan's overage rates. The base plan price is not included. Projects on their own plans are not included.
  • When the estimated overage reaches an amount, Sanity emails the organization's administrators and billing managers, and the email address in the organization's billing details. Administrators and billing managers also see the alert in their Sanity Dashboard notifications.
  • Each alert sends once per calendar month (UTC). It resets at the start of the next month. If your overage reaches the amount again next month, you are alerted again.

An amount of $0 means "tell me as soon as any resource goes over its included quota." Resources with no overage price don't trigger it.

Usage is metered periodically. Some resources are metered every few minutes, others once an hour or once a day, so an alert can arrive some time after the overage is reached. If the overage is already above the amount when you save it, the alert is sent within a few minutes.

The alert names the organization, the amount you set, and the estimated overage for the month so far. That is the same estimate Manage shows on the Spending alerts page. It is not your invoice total. The estimate is rounded to the nearest dollar, so a $0 alert can arrive while Manage still shows $0. The alert then shows the overage as less than $1.

Plans that support spending alerts

Spending alerts only fire on organization plans that bill overage, such as Growth and Enterprise. On the Free plan and the Growth trial, usage stops at the included quota, so there is no overage to alert on.

Unless your organization has an Enterprise contract, its organization plan follows the highest plan among its projects. For example, an organization with one Growth project is on the Growth organization plan.

To get overage billing instead of a hard stop, upgrade a project to Growth. See Change your plan, or compare plans.

Set up a spending alert

You need the Administrator or Billing manager role in the organization. Other members can't open Billing. Spending alerts require an organization plan that bills overage.

To add a spending alert:

  • In Manage, select your organization.
  • In the sidebar, select Billing › Spending alerts.
  • Select Add alert.
  • In Alert amount (USD), enter a whole US dollar amount of $0 or more.
  • Select Save.

The page shows the estimated overage for the current month and the status of each alert: Watching until it sends, then Sent with the date for the rest of the month.

To change an amount, select Edit on the alert. The changed alert can send again in the same month if the new amount is reached. To stop an alert, select Delete, then Delete alert to confirm.

Spending alerts and spending limits

Both are set per organization under Billing in Manage, but they do different things:

Spending alerts

Spending limits

What it does

Notifies you when estimated overage reaches an amount

Pauses a feature when its spending reaches a cap

What it covers

All metered resources on your organization plan

AI credits

Effect on usage

None

AI features pause until the next month or until you raise the limit

Use both: set a spending limit to put a hard cap on AI spend, and set spending alerts to hear about overage across the whole plan before it grows.

What spending alerts don't do

  • They don't block or pause usage.
  • They don't cover projects on their own plans.
  • They don't alert on a percentage of a quota or on a forecast. The quota emails at 80% and 100% for plans without overage, described in Plans and payments, keep working as before.
  • They don't send to Slack or webhooks.
