Unable to add billing info despite being administrator on free tier

2 repliesLast updated: Nov 29, 2025

Hi,
I'm trying to add billing information, but it states that I have insufficient permissions. However – I'm an administrator, and we don't have separate roles (we are currently on the free tier).

What can I do to gain access to entering billing information?
AI Update

It sounds like you're running into a permissions issue with managing billing in your Sanity organization. Here's what's likely happening and how to fix it:

The Issue

In Sanity, there's an important distinction between organization roles and project roles. Even if you're an Administrator at the project level, this doesn't automatically give you billing permissions at the organization level.

Based on the platform terminology documentation, billing is managed at the organization level, not the project level. To add or manage billing information, you need one of these organization-level roles:

How to Fix This

Since you're on the free tier and don't have separate roles configured yet, here's what you need to do:

Important Note

As mentioned in the documentation, "Organization administrators don't automatically have access to every project in the organization. However, they do have the ability to fully manage user membership in projects (including their own membership)." The reverse is also true - project administrators don't automatically have organization-level permissions like billing access.

If you're still having trouble, you may need to contact Sanity support to help sort out the organization ownership and roles.
