Understanding quotas
Learn how Sanity usage quotas reset, what happens when you exceed them, and how to increase your limits.
Your Sanity plan includes usage quotas for resources like API requests, bandwidth, documents, and assets. This article explains how quotas reset, what happens when you exceed them, and how to increase your limits.
Check your current usage
You can monitor your project's usage in the Sanity management dashboard. Go to sanity.io/manage, select your project, and open the Usage tab. Quotas are metered per calendar month, so usage shown over a longer date range is a rollup of monthly periods rather than an annual allowance.
Some resources are metered per organization rather than per project. To see them, select the organization instead of a project and open its Usage tab. AI Credits appear under AI, and Sanity Functions figures under Compute.
When quotas reset
Usage-based quotas (API requests, bandwidth) reset at 00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month. The reset follows UTC, not your local time zone. Point-in-time quotas (documents, assets) are measured continuously and reflect your current usage rather than resetting.
What happens when you exceed a quota
The behavior depends on your plan:
Free plan
Free plans have hard caps. When you reach a quota limit, the affected functionality is restricted until the quota resets or you upgrade your plan. For example, exceeding API request limits blocks public API access, though Sanity Studio continues to function. You receive email alerts at 80% and 100% usage.
Growth plan
Growth plans use pay-as-you-go billing for overages. Your service continues uninterrupted, and any usage beyond your included quota is added to your monthly invoice. See the pricing page for overage rates.
Enterprise plan
Enterprise plans have custom quota terms. Contact your account representative for details about your specific limits and overage policies.
How to increase your quotas
You have several options for increasing your quotas:
- Upgrade your plan: Moving from Free to Growth unlocks pay-as-you-go billing and higher base quotas. Moving to Enterprise provides custom limits.
- Add a quota increase: Growth plans can add a quota increase for higher base limits. See the pricing page for details.
- Contact support: If you need limits beyond the standard options, contact Sanity support to discuss custom arrangements.
Tips for managing usage
- Use the API CDN (useCdn: true) for public, read-heavy queries. CDN requests have a higher included quota than uncached API requests.
- Cache API responses in your application where possible to reduce request volume.
- Monitor the Usage tab in your project dashboard regularly to catch unexpected spikes early.
