Does Sanity support any form of pushing data to it via API, or does everything have to go through Sanity Studio?

The studio is but a client to the datastore. So you have access to all the APIs that it has. This is core to Sanity.io ’s design philosophy 🙂

is the studio UI open sourced in some way as a whole, or just the sanity/ui components? just wondering if one could simply fork that as a starting point

The whole studio is open source here: https://github.com/sanity-io/sanity We're in the process of refactoring it to Sanity UI and the studio components will also be documented as a result of that project.
It has a lot of extension points though, so I'd avoid forking the studio app as such. What do you want to do

Yeah thanks, I was just wondering if it was an option as a last resort. We’re planning on replacing the first pane with a product-finder-like UI using filters and showing all the items in a single list affected by the filters.
Maybe you can verify if that is even possible?
