Gatsby Sanity Source Query - Is GROQ Better Than GraphQL?

Is it commonplace to use the JS GROQ client library instead of GraphQL to query a Sanity datastore in Gatsby? It seems that GROQ has a few features that make it more powerful than GraphQL for querying Sanity documents, but the gatsby-sanity-source plugin and most online examples point to just sticking with GraphQL.
